• Challenge: YOUNG PEOPLE ARE
    NOT GIVEN ENOUGH
    OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPRESS
    THEMSELVES
Literary arts allow students to engage
in a creative process with caring adults,
talk about their experiences, develop their
own voice and reflect on the past to inform
    future decisions. Literary arts allow
    students to develop communication and
collaboration skills as well as receive
feedback on their writing. Working together,
students and adults can form a community
with each other and other cultures.

Albany Park Theatre Project

The Albany Park Theatre Project (APTP) engages youth in writing and producing professional theater. APTP’s productions often represent the diverse cultural backgrounds of the ensemble and the challenges they deal with on a day-to-day basis. Youth ensemble members interview members of their community to gather real-life stories, and work with teaching artists to develop them into productions. Each production attracts roughly 4,000 people to its performances annually. APTP also offers group and individual tutoring for 10-15 hours per week, as well as a college preparation and placement program.
